Augmented Reality Kiosk by Lego
Tuesday, 03 February 2009
It has been nearly 2 years since I finished my thesis, but sometimes I still encounter relevant articles that I would like to add to the archive. In one of the chapters I discussed the use of augmented reality in narrowcasting.

There were quite some examples of augmented reality in advertising in the meanwhile; but it’s the first time I stumble upon an in-store interactive kiosk that was built for this idea:

The content of the box is augmented on top of it when held in front of the camera.
Makes perfect sense for this product. Nice implementation. Via Geekologie.

v-cards 2.0
Thursday, 22 January 2009
While Pokens and E are getting hot, I’d be happy with just an improved and more usable way of sending v-cards once mobiles have Near Field Communication. Something like a native app, simple and fully customizable, which pops up for both parties when you hold 2 phones together:

Screen when 2 phones are helt together

Imagine two people meeting in a bar or other fugacious social context. One of the parties might want to share a limited facebook profile, but doesn't feel comfortable yet swapping addresses or phone numbers. There are countless ways of meeting other people, and you can't really predict how the user feels about the social interaction.

Point is that user needs are key and are ought to be respected in coming up with such privacy sensitive devices and services. Customization will therefore become more important, especially when users are on multiple social networks and meet within different social enviornments.

While not much is known yet about E, it seems like they share this vision. They made the right decision by going for the NFC standard; making their service compatible with future mobile phones. On top of that, they also seem to have thought about a user’s context by offering profiles so they can somewhat control what info they share. I'm definitely keeping my eye on this service.

Workpace

When you do a lot of deskwork, you might become sore after a while; maybe even risk getting RSI. Some colleagues at the uni used this software to prevent these issues. (n/a for Mac)

To be honest, I first hated the idea behind the concept. It's very intrusive, since it prompts you with a message when it's time to take a break. On top of that, it locks down your computer if you don't ignore.

A (Dutch - aslo available in English) RSI prevention prompt

While I used to laugh at them in the past, I confess I recently complied.. Long days in the office gave me sore shoulders. It's actually a pretty nice tool, and really does help you get more easily through office situations when tension works on your muscles.

Everything the package prompts you with, is scientifically validated and it provides an interesting personal history on how hard you have been working.

Workintensity - 10 = really hard working
As you can see, I have not been working really hard today

A good example of persuasive software, just don't forget to shut it down while giving a presentation.
