The interactive Dolmar chainsaw
Monday, 12 March 2007

Through the Arduino playgrounds I stumbled upon this project:

“The goal was to create a simulation of a lumberjack discipline - cutting disc with a certain weight - with dolmar’s latest chainsaw model ps-5000. we concentrated on creating a hardware / software solution for a realistic experience of working with a chainsaw.”

I'm not too sure if this was done for promotional purposes, but I guess so.
Really nice project yielding the interactive narrowcasting subject if you ask me.

Anti Narrowcasting
Monday, 26 February 2007

The idea behind this video gives us something to think about:

Advertising  = Graffiti.

What if retailers could offer narrowcasting with added value for the consumer? How can interaction help them in this?

Since I started researching this subject, I’m comparing narrowcasting a bit with the evolution of the internet. Back in the days, websites weren’t much more then digitalized folders: so called “brochure ware”. Nowadays everything is more dynamic, see web 2.0 etc. Companies want to start a dialogue with their consumers. I wish narrowcasting the same evolution..

But interaction is mandatory for this.

Minority Report-ish
Saturday, 24 February 2007

Interesting remark by my Swedish friend Benjamin. I stumbled across the particular scene in the movie that would suit my project just fine:

(Un)fortunally digital narrators and technology isn’t that advanced yet.

But when I see this I start wondering: does this kind of advertising become interesting to the crowd, or rather freaky?

I was asked to include a chapter about privacy, but I see this somehow being different to emotional appeal during add-exposure while personal information is being processed.

Microsoft's Narrowcasting
Friday, 16 February 2007

Impressive stuff at the JFK Airport in New York. Excellent design for a multi-screen setup.

Apparently Microsoft also wants to jump on the interactive narrowcasting boat. Two Dutch blogs speculate about the development of facial recognition software and even a complete digital signage solution. The interesting thing about the facial software is that it would be able to determine the sex of the client in front.

Mini greets clients on the road
Saturday, 03 February 2007

Mini picked up the 1 to 1 interactive marketing idea as well. I must honestly say the concept behind this idea is very close to what I’m trying to create with Mediawave.

Image

In cities such as Chicago and Miami they have installed digital billboards who are able to receive identification messages from the MINI's passing by. As the car is tagged with information about the owner, the billboard is able to recognize the driver and greet him/her with a personalized message."

As for the privacy matters of this campaign:

“It's also important to say that the drivers involved in this promotion actually opted-in to be part of the game.”
