Master Thesis: Interactive Narrowcasting
An alternative view on sensors
Thursday, 09 November 2006
When I was in Sweden last week, I took the opportunity to visit my old university. I had a discussion there with one of my ex - interaction design professors about my thesis. After explaining some possible proof – of - concept projects, he made a very interesting remark.

If I would consider interactive concepts which link user proximity to onscreen content, I could work with motion detection software through a regular webcam.

Interesting, I didn’t think of this. Besides this, there are some noticeable advantages of image motion recognition over electronical way’s. This might sound a bit complicated, so I sketched this image to clear things up:

topview webcam
Motion detection with webcam attached to the ceiling

With this I can detect people’s movement in 2 axis (x & y). Also; electronical (ping) sensors are generally limited in their max distance measuring (3 meters), but when using a visual image I could detect anything inside my image crop. This is also a much cheaper solution.

The disadvantage would be the technical side, I have whatsoever no idea yet about how to extract data from this kind of motion detection software into flash, but that’s will be just a matter of research since people are already working with this software combination in Sweden.

But let’s not get ahead of things, I still have to perform research and study all my literature first.

ASIST Interactive Narrowcasting
Wednesday, 25 October 2006
Shocking, just when I thought I was completely on my own on this one, I found out that this company is already mass producing interactive narrowcasting panels! And.. they are even Dutch. Looks like the title shift was really needed, since it already brings up relevant info. But it also looks like I didn't research very well before coming up with the proposition.

Asist interactive narrowcasting

It only involves touch interaction, but their product could give an added value to my final project.

Then I found this on their website:

Become our partner
For this new channel there is a need for specialized parties that become ASIST partners. ASIST partners can shift ASIST from being a hardware solution towards a complete tailor made solution. Your additive services can be in the field of:

- Consultancy on how to best use ASIST
- Content creation
- Content management
- Video creation
- Servicing and installation
- Display (housing) creation
- Market research
- And more..

If you think you can sell ASIST in combination with your services, please contact us.

Perhaps I just found a contact to deliver me a decent project? I also heard that one of last year's student did his thesis about regular narrowcasting. Looks like I really need to look into this stuff, and start contacting some new people.

Referrers
Monday, 23 October 2006

All relevant links to online sources for my thesis will eventually be in my bibliography, but also in my del.icio.us account. You could subscribe to my link feed to stay up to date, or become a member of my network if you own a delicious account yourself. This info will always be available in my exit box.

As a start to show the impact of an interactive add, I referred to a movie with a campaign by team-one.usa.

This video I unveiled in my proposition presentation to prove that innovative interactive concepts appeal to the crowd. I must say that this a good example of a well designed interactive concept, but the wow effect is mainly generated because of the hologram display. In this video people outside the showroom could alter the content on the display with a touchscreen. They could change colours, set backgrounds etc. My electronics/sensor & new media prototype probably won’t have the same wow effect, but might have a more interesting marketing outcome. More information in my updated proposition soon.

By the way; I’m thinking about altering the title from Interactive Advertising to Interactive Narrowcasting. Interactive advertising is kind of a broad term for what I’m trying to accomplish.

Thesis Project Lineout
Thursday, 19 October 2006
Nederlandse versie bij meer lezen | In repond to the previous comments:

1. Please keep them in English if possible.
2. My project:

For the people that have absolutely no idea of what I’m trying to accomplish or research: a short lineout of my proof of concept.

I will try to make an interactive billboard, that can be displayed in the shopping malls or train stations. Technically I try to accomplish this with a screen. The content on this screen is provided by a old normal pc that runs Flash. Flash reads the values from the Arduino Board that is connected to sensors around the screen. The kind of sensors depend on the concept I design. The stuff I could use as input for content comes down to:

- Touch
- Proximity / Position
- Size
- Temperature
- Light / Darkness
- Moisten Level
- Sound
- Movement
- Weight

Think for example that I would design a concept where the position of a person according to my billboard will be measured. Yielding these values I could play different movie clips in Flash. This way I could – for example – advertise a horror movie in a video store, where a customer is invited to get closer to the screen by a movie character. When he eventually is, he gets shocked by a scary action of the character and additional info about the flick is shown. The possibilities of the concepts are only limited by the creativity of the designer.

Arduino Board
This baby can read sensors and input the values into Flash for example

In my research I’d like to find out if electronics combined with new media can have an added value in advertising by adding interaction - plus - which creative possibilities this exposes. Currently I don’t have much to refer to, and will be performing research in an uncultivated area.

In respond to the question how I differentiate to Alex’s thesis subject: it’s really pretty close to what I’m trying to research, since he’s researching the possibilities of new technologies within advertising, and mine might be one. His subject might be broader then mine, but I feel like my thesis could be a part of his research.

Proposition online
Thursday, 05 October 2006
The subject I picked last year still stands strong. I decided from a very early stage to research the possibilities with electronics and new media in advertising to make it interactive. You might remember the x-sense project we made back in Sweden? Well, my thesis will be a research to a more or less commercial translation. I didn’t really get much feedback, but I guess the proposition I handed in just needs some polishing. As for the version that’s online now I added information based on the critique I received on the very first coaching and the new contacts I got. Nathalie gave me 2 books which I’m reading right now. My research question became more defined: “Can we do more effectively narrowcasting by adding interaction through means of new media and / or electronics?” And next week we’ll be discussing these propositions deeply.

Since the Experience Design conference, I found out who to assign as my co-promoter: Thomas Laureyssens is one of our teachers with a large field of interest and an experienced concept developer. He’ll be teaching game lab in the second term. The first person I will refer to in my thesis for my expert interview will be Daniel Schots. As one of the creative managers within Navajo, I hope he will be eager to help me discuss and test creative interactive advertising concepts.

The second will be Nathan Shedroff. I had the chance to talk him on the experience design conference, and he would be happy to answer some of my questions regarding interaction and experience design. These interviews are vital for my research and will be important referrers.
